Regional knowledge centre
ESARP also acts as a regional ‘knowledge centre’ for both political parties and other interested actors.
The programme offers comparative information and lessons within the region for both political parties and other interested actors on themes that are of relevance to the institutional strengthening of political parties in particular and democratisation in general.
One way this is done is through carrying out research and analyses of selected themes and sharing the findings with political parties themselves and their partners. In this way, the regional programme is also key to the development of the NIMD Knowledge Centre at the NIMD headquarters.
Bringing together political and civil society around a democratic reform agenda, and building consensus for the necessary constitutional reform.
The NIMD programme in Zambia focuses on constitutional reforms and political accountability.
In Tanzania the NIMD programme focuses on electoral and constitutional reform, accountability and leadership.
In 2008 the NIMD programme in Mozambique has facilitated a series of debates at the provincial level. RENAMO and FRELIMO party representatives participated in two regional NIMD activities.
NIMD’s Malian partner CMDID has been able to achieve consensus on the establishment of an independent institution to manage the electoral process, and a code of conduct for political parties.
In partnership with the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD-M), the NIMD programme in Malawi has helped political parties and the Electoral Commission develop joint initiatives to ensure free and fair elections in 2009.
In the aftermath of election violence in 2008 NIMD’s Kenyan partner, the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD-K) created the Building Bridges of Understanding project. It aims to promote understanding between different ethnic communities through community exchange visits and dialogue.
During a recent working visit to Zambia, NIMD and its local partner, the Zambian Centre for Inter-Party Dialogue (ZCID) jointly agreed upon a priority agenda for institutional strengthening.
